What Are Tooth Extractions?
When a tooth is too damaged or decayed to be saved, an extraction may be necessary to protect your oral health. At Shoals Oral & Facial Surgery, we prioritize making the experience as comfortable as possible. Whether you need a simple extraction or oral surgery to remove an impacted tooth, we ensure you're at ease every step of the way. With sedation options such as nitrous oxide and IV anesthesia, you can relax throughout the procedure. Once your treatment is complete, we'll provide you with the care instructions needed for a smooth recovery. Reach out to our office in Sheffield or Florence, AL to schedule a consultation and explore your options for tooth extraction.
How Are Tooth Extractions Performed?
Tooth extractions are typically performed with local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. We also offer more powerful sedation options if you're undergoing a more complex surgical extraction or if you struggle with dental anxiety. For a simple extraction, we'll loosen the tooth using a special tool called an elevator before carefully removing it. In cases of impacted or wisdom teeth, a surgical extraction may be required, which involves making small incisions in the gum to access the tooth. The tooth may need to be broken into smaller pieces for easier removal. After finishing the extraction, we'll use sutures to close the incision.
You should plan on sticking to soft foods like pudding, ice cream, or soup for at least a few days after your tooth extraction. We also recommend that you avoid smoking, spicy foods, or straws, which may dislodge any blood clots and irritate the treatment area. Our team at Shoals Oral & Facial Surgery will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smoother healing process after your tooth extraction.
What Are Some of the Benefits of Tooth Extractions?
Tooth extraction is often a necessary step in preserving your oral health. Whether you need an emergency tooth extraction after an injury or are struggling with pain from impacted wisdom teeth, acting early can lead to several key benefits:
- Prevents damage to surrounding teeth
- Prepares for dental implants
- Can be done with minimal discomfort using topical anesthetic
- Quick and efficient procedure
- Helps prevent the spread of infection
Tooth Extractions Reviews
I was So nervous. I highly dislike going to the dentist. They removed my wisdom teeth and a broken tooth. They were super friendly and professional. I am in no pain less than 24hrs after surgery. I highly recommend this office!
I’m currently just over 24 hours following a tooth extraction and implant. No pain, no swelling and I was able to get off my pain pills today as well! Procedure took about 30 minutes- spoke with the kind Nurse, for a few minutes, spoke with Dr. Frederick he said this will make you sleepy as he put the magic potion in my veins. I fell asleep, took a nap and the procedure was over.Thank you Dr. Frederick, the Nurse, Secretary, and Technician for their time and talents yesterday!Have no fear folks, they’ll have you on your way to grill of the year in no time!A true blessing to the Shoals!Thank y’all again!Brandon

My surgery went great,5 extractions, 5 bone grafts, minimal swelling, pain easily controlled & resolved more by next day. Was awake till bedtime, slept all night after surgery.Dr Mcllwain is the best on oral surgery.I’ve had surgery twice by him over the years & he is trained & determined to do the work to perfection treating you like he would like to be treated.I’ve never heard anything but good outcomes about Dr Mcllwain in my years as an RN working for Helen Keller Hospital 23 years.Thank you Dr Mcllwain & staff.Phyllis Grissom
Great service!! Just had wisdom teeth removed and recovery has been great!
Nicest folks down there at the Florence office. Dr. Jonathan Frederick, D.M.D., M.D. is such a treasure for our area. He's smart, thoughtful and explains his findings in a way that's easy to understand. I took my son there to have his wisdom teeth removed and they are great with children and I went for something myself and they are also great with adults!
