Wisdom Tooth Removal in Sheffield and Florence, AL

Wisdom teeth, the final set of molars, typically emerge in your late teens or early twenties. Located at the back corners of your mouth, these third molars often don't have enough space to grow properly, making them difficult to clean and more susceptible to issues. Impacted, misaligned, or improperly developed wisdom teeth can lead to a range of dental problems that may require removal to maintain optimal oral health. At Shoals Oral & Facial Surgery, our experienced team performs wisdom tooth removal for Sheffield and Florence, AL patients to prevent misalignment, relieve discomfort, and avoid future complications. If you or a loved one is experiencing pain or issues with wisdom teeth, contact us today to schedule a consultation and explore your treatment options.

At Shoals Oral & Facial Surgery, we perform wisdom tooth removal under local anesthesia, with the option for additional sedation to ensure your comfort. If the wisdom teeth are impacted (stuck under the gums) or have complex roots, we may divide the tooth into smaller sections for easier removal. In most cases, we can remove all four wisdom teeth in one session. We'll make incisions in your gums to access the teeth and use sutures to close the sites for faster healing. After the procedure, our team will provide you with post-operative instructions to help you recover smoothly.

After wisdom tooth extraction, it's normal to experience some discomfort, swelling, and bleeding. You'll need to rest and follow our team's aftercare instructions for a smooth recovery. During the first few days, stick to soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, and soup, and avoid hard or crunchy foods. Most patients can resume normal eating within 7 – 10 days, though it's important to continue avoiding certain foods and activities, like smoking, for a few weeks to ensure proper healing.

Whether you're dealing with impacted wisdom teeth or just want to avoid future complications, removing them can greatly improve your overall dental health. Here are the key benefits of wisdom tooth extraction:

  • Prevents infection
  • Alleviates discomfort
  • Prevents teeth from shifting
  • Reduces risk of cysts or tumors
  • Eases oral hygiene maintenance
  • Stops gum irritation
  • Promotes long-term dental health

I was So nervous. I highly dislike going to the dentist. They removed my wisdom teeth and a broken tooth. They were super friendly and professional. I am in no pain less than 24hrs after surgery. I highly recommend this office!

Nicest folks down there at the Florence office. Dr. Jonathan Frederick, D.M.D., M.D. is such a treasure for our area. He's smart, thoughtful and explains his findings in a way that's easy to understand. I took my son there to have his wisdom teeth removed and they are great with children and I went for something myself and they are also great with adults!

Ideally, wisdom teeth removal or third molar extraction is recommended for patients between the ages of 17 and 25, as this is often the best time for oral surgery for wisdom teeth before complications develop. Not everyone will require wisdom tooth extraction, but leaving impacted or poorly positioned molars in place can increase the risk of tooth infection, crowding, and long-term dental issues. Our team may recommend wisdom teeth extraction surgery for patients experiencing the following concerns:

  • Completely or partially impacted wisdom teeth within the gums or jaw
  • Inadequate space for proper tooth eruption or alignment
  • The development of a lump in the neck or surrounding areas
  • Gum inflammation, bleeding, pericoronitis, cheek swelling, or jaw discomfort
  • Crooked teeth or shifting due to pressure from third molars
  • Tooth decay or cavities in wisdom teeth, or difficulty keeping the area clean and free of bacteria
Will I be awake during wisdom tooth removal?

Wisdom tooth removal is typically performed under local anesthesia, with the option for additional sedation if needed. This ensures you remain comfortable and relaxed throughout the procedure. Our team will discuss sedation options with you during a consultation in Sheffield and Florence, AL.

What can I eat after wisdom tooth removal?

Stick to soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, and soup for the first few days after surgery. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods that could irritate the surgical area. How many wisdom teeth can be removed in one session?

In most cases, all four wisdom teeth can be removed in a single session for convenience and to streamline the healing process. If your teeth are impacted or have complex roots, the process may take a bit longer. Our trained staff will assess your situation and recommend the best approach.
